New Tenure Track Start-Up Development Funds Use Guidelines

Funding provided to new tenure track faculty for furthering their research and as start-up funds shall be used for research-related expenditures exclusively. Any exceptions require review by the College of Professional Studies (CPS) Dean.

NOTE:  All equipment and materials purchased with State funds will remain state property and do not belong to the faculty or go with them upon leaving Humboldt.

Acceptable uses of start-up funds include:

  • Travel for research and/or conference attendance related to faculty research.
  • Research and/or computer equipment and/or software – review proposed purchase with Department Chair and CPS Dean (and ITS as appropriate) prior to commitment. Consideration needs to be given to repair and maintenance costs or any technical support required.
  • Materials needed for research. Examples may be cameras, tools, etc.
  • Research assistants, such as student assistants or graduate assistants.
  • Books or media (digital, video, and audio) will be University property. If acquired in consultation with the Library Collection Development Librarian, they will consider:
    • if the material can be purchased with Library funds;
    • whether lower cost or more efficient alternatives may be available;
    • other formats such as streaming, Netflix, digital databases.
  • Other proposals should be reviewed with Department Chair and CPS Dean.

Uses not approved for start-up funds include:

  • Expenditure of funds for hospitality.
  • Purchase of office furniture, decorations, or accessories.
  • Expenditures not allowed by State policy for General Funds.
